Virginia Tech scientist develops model for robots with bacterial brains

(Published on Jul 16, 2015)

Forget the Vulcan mind-meld of the Star Trek generation — as far as mind control techniques go, bacteria is the next frontier.

In a paper published today in Scientific Reports, which is part of the Nature Publishing Group, a Virginia Tech scientist used a mathematical model to demonstrate that bacteria can control the behavior of an inanimate device like a robot.

“Basically we were trying to find out from the mathematical model if we could build a living microbiome on a nonliving host and control the host through the microbiome,” said Warren Ruder, an assistant professor of biological systems engineering in both the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the College of Engineering.

Robots pass Self Consciousness Tests

(Published on Jul 9, 2015)

More recently, in response to a challenge posed by philosopher Luciano Floridi, we showed that a relatively simple reasoning process (where the reasoning was carried out in our DCEC* formalism) can pass another test of self-consciousness. The task simply involves three robots: two are given “dumbing” pills (which renders them unable to speak), and one is given a placebo. All three robots (who are previously made aware of the rules of this task) are asked whether they received the dumbing pills or not. The one who was given the placebo might say “I don’t know,” and upon realizing that he just spoke, reason that he therefore must have been given the placebo. A demonstration of this in action is in the following video:

Mobile Snake-Arm Robot

(Published on Jul 15, 2015)

Robotic dinosaurs and humanoid lobby staff helped guests check in to a hotel run by androids, at the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Sasebo, Nagasaki, Wednesday. The 72-room hotel, set to open in full on July 17, is staffed by 10 robots and 10 humans. Its name, “Henn na,” means ‘strange hotel.’

Ken Goldberg: 4 Lessons from Robots about being Human (TED talk)

(Published on Jul 15, 2015)

The more that robots ingrain themselves into our everyday lives, the more we’re forced to examine ourselves as people. At TEDxBerkeley, Ken Goldberg shares four very human lessons that he’s learned from working with robots.
