Google is working on driverless car technology since 2009 under the famous Self-Driving Car Project. Now Google has added one more alphabet company called Waymo for further development of self-driving car technologies. Waymo will now take self-driving car project further. Waymo stands for a new way forward in mobility.
Waymo’s mission is to make self-driving car safe and easy for people and things to move around.
Google self-driving car project is running since last eight year but now Google came with new dedicated company for future development of driverless car technologies. Why?
In Last two year we have seen more and more thrust of automobile and robotics companies are going on driverless car. Even mobile app based taxi provider companies like Uber is also investing huge amount of money in development of driver less car. Tesla is ready with their semi automated driver assisted cars and other companies are working on it. It means driverless technology has enormous commercial potential in near future. But at the present time no commercial fully autonomous car is available in the market. Self-driving cars need to become more like industrial robots, which can run autonomously for years without human intervention. To focus on commercializing this technology, Google made dedicated company -Waymo. Waymo’s next steps will be to let people use fully self-driving cars to do everyday things like run errands or commute to work. Also Waymo will explore many different opportunities for self-driving technology.

Why Driverless Car?
- Today, more than 1.25 million people die on our global roadways every year. That’s the equivalent of a 737 falling out of the sky every hour of every day. In the US — 35,000 people lost their lives in 2015 — and it’s a number that is going up.
- Meanwhile, 20 to 30 million Americans who are old enough for a license are unable to drive because of disability
- The average urban commuter in the U.S. wastes 42 hours annually stuck in traffic jams. This costs us a combined $160 billion a year in gas burned and time lost.
- And vehicles spend 94% of their time idle and parked.
